The scheme consist of a diversion dam at Ichari, about 72 km upstream of Kalsi alongwith intake and sediment exclusion arrangements to divert the water into a 6.2 km long power tunnel which feeds an underground power house at Chibro utilizing a drop of 124m. The water out going from the power house can either be discharged into river Tons or fed through tunnel into the part II of the scheme.

Layout of Yamuna Hydel Scheme |
The diversion dam is a straight gravity concrete dam 59.25m high above the deepest foundation with a live storage capacity of 5.11 million m3 for diurnal variation. The total length of dam at top is about 155m with seven spilling bays, each of 9.5m clear opening separated by 3m thick piers.
A 20m diameter, 100m high, restricted orifice type underground surge tank is provided on the upstream of the power house. Four pressure shafts (diameter 3.81 m) off take from the bottom of the surge tank to feed the four units of the power house.
Chibro power house is an underground power house. the power house complex at Chibro consists of a power house. cavity (113m x 18m). Surge tank on its upstream and collection gallery on its downstream along with an outlet tunnel for discharging water into river Tons and a syphon tunnel for conducting water into the Part-II of the project the power house has 4 vertical shaft Francis units, each of 60 MW.
An underground collection gallery 11m wide and varing in height is provided on the downstream of the power house to collect the waater escaping from the four draft tubes. The collection gallery has been extended on the left bank side to function as downstream expansion chamber.
